Fashanu and Adepoju slam Klopp for calling CAN ‘little tournament’

Duo Mutiu Adepoju and John Fashanu are the latest to hit Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp after calling the Africa Cup of Nations a “small tournament”.

Liverpool are set to lose Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita and Sadio Mane for the month-long tournament, which runs from January 9 to February 6, 2022, as all players will represent their countries, Egypt, Guinea and Senegal respectively.

The Reds convincingly dispatched Arsenal 4-0 to Anfield Stadium this weekend and the German has expressed frustration at losing some of his key players this winter.

“In January there is a little tournament in Africa, I just want to say, and I think Asia also plays games – South America too, great, I can’t wait,” the manager said on Saturday. .

However, winner of CAN 1994, Adepoju criticized the Liverpool manager for such a comment.

“It’s his own opinion and it’s in his own selfish interests because he doesn’t want to lose some of his players,” Adepoju told PUNCH.

“How will he feel if we say that the European competition is a small tournament?

“The way I see it, he said it because he doesn’t want to lose his key players and I don’t think he needs to be even given a lot of attention.”

Former England player of Nigerian descent, Fashanu also hit the Liverpool boss.

“It’s a big slap in the face for black players around the world. I’m very disappointed that someone we rated as well as we did with his silly mouth. It’s an insult to all of us and he owes the continent an apology and he owes all black footballers an apology too, putting us down in this way is very dangerous.

“Some black footballers have lost their lives fighting for equality and this man has just challenged us by saying that our competition means nothing.

“It is a shame that has come out of his mouth because he knows the situation of racism and how we have lost lives because of things like this.”
