“Janmabhoomi & Karmabhoomi”: Kotak Mahindra Bank Wins Trademark Rights for Mumbai’s Two Metro Stations

Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB), headed by Uday Kotak, announced on Friday that it had secured semi-naming rights for Mumbai’s next two metro stations – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus) and Bandra Kurla Complex.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has granted these rights to KMB for five years until 2028, starting from the commissioning of the line. These metro stations should be open to the public at the end of 2023.

Uday Kotak, CEO of Kotak Mahindra Bank, said in a tweet that these two stations are important to the Kotak Group because one represents Kotak’s birthplace and the other represents the company’s current headquarters.

Shanti Ekambaram, group president and full-time designate director, said in a statement: “The past meets the present and that too on the high-speed trains of the city’s favorite new lifeline. Obtaining these trademark rights is a celebration of our group’s humble beginnings in the four-storey Navsari building in Fort, CSMT area, to our current address – our sister office buildings in BKC.”

The group started its operations in a small office near the Navsari Building in the old Victoria Terminus area in South Mumbai.

However, over time, the group has grown into an integrated financial services conglomerate whose nerve center is currently headquartered in the Bandra Kurla complex.
